Enter: iAd

Apple once again incited quite a bit of buzz this week with not one but two major annoucements: the launch of both the new iPhone 4 (not to be confused with 4G) and the iAd mobile ad platform. The latter developent is most intriguing, as this is the first time Apple has dipped its foot into the ad serving game (and given developers a chance to make some cash in the process). iAd already claims to have taken 60 million in media bookings from major brands, and has sparked an antitrust scandal. Not bad in less than 2 business days....

Social Shoppers

Does social media use lead to online shopping? A recent survey seems to suggest it does:

In the first quarter of 2010, internet users spent, on average, $50 shopping online, relays eMarketer. According to the survey, Facebook members that use the site heavily spent an average of $67 on online merchandise. More casual Facebook users either exceeded or met the online average as well. Non-visitors spend an average of only $27.

I'd argue it's hard to prove any causal relationship in situations like these. For one thing, social media users tend to be younger — and younger people tend to be more comfortable with online shopping in general.

Causal relationship or not, it's pretty clear that you should be advertising on social networks to capture online shoppers.

Sticker Wars

Facebook and Google are acting a bit like indie bands these days — handing out stickers to help promote themselves. These two online giants are finding that the best/cheapest way to reach someone offline might just be stickers on local businesses.

I think Google wins the sticker war though — the instant gratification/ease of use of a QR code beats out typing a long url into your smart phone.

How to get a Facebook Like or Google Places sticker is still a mystery, but I'm guessing all local businesses will want them soon.
