Zuck Is Ordering His Crown

The BBC shows Facebook's world domination in pretty graph form.

Beyond that, there is a funny bit in the footnote of this graph: The Nielsen Company doesn't classify Flickr and Twitter as social networks. Which makes me wonder, what does Nielsen classify them as?

The New MapQuest Is on a Mission

Impossible as it may seem, MapQuest used to set the gold standard for online map services. Then Google Maps and Bing Maps ran 'em off the road like a couple of Spy Hunter minibosses.

With today's launch of the new MapQuest, the veteran company is back like Pontiac to reclaim its booty. From the fresh new look and feel to the simplified UI, the new MapQuest seems to be positioning itself as a sensible alternative to its feature-rich, UX-poor competitors.

A decade can be a lifetime in internet years, though, and many venerable platforms have seen mixed results from recent reboots. What do you think: will MapQuest follow Flickr's road to redemption or careen down Friendster's road to nowhere?

Flickr and Facebook Start Playing Nice Together

What is it about this time of year that makes Flickr want to be more social? In June of '09, the photo sharing platform launched its Flickr2Twitter integration. And now, at long last, Flickr is using Yahoo! Updates to cozy up with Facebook (no blessed union yet — maybe they want to see what living together is like first).

Of course, moving in raises issues on both sides of the relationship. For Flickr's older demo, Implementation is simple enough (you can find out more about it here and connect accounts here), but what about the whole privacy thing? Facebook users, on the other hand, may chafe over the little details, like the fact that photo tagging isn't integrated across platforms yet.

So, will the Flickr-Facebook hookup last? Guess we'll have to wait and see. As with any decent relationship, it's all about compromise.

#LetsColour's Grudge Against Grey

The Let's Colour Project is out to brighten our global mood by getting rid of grey spaces. While I personally find no fault in neutrals, I'll admit the full-bleed images of revitalized favelas on the campaign's Flickr page warm the cockles of my heart. And if the buzz on Twitter is any indicator, I'm not the only one.

BP & Transocean Use Social Media For Oil Spill Aid

As I look at the Gulf of Mexico oil spill aid website created by BP and Transocean, I'm reminded of the true magic of social media.  It's also nice to see complete transparency between both the government and companies involved in such a catastrophic disaster, and witness firsthand their coming together to provide assistance.  Check out news/info in the form of Facebook, @Oil_Spill_2010, Flickr and YouTube here.

Social Sites and (RED) Unite on World AIDS Day

Today was World AIDS Day, and thanks to the efforts of major social networks it was probably the most visual World AIDS Day yet. Read more about what went down today, as well as how social media has helped (RED) fight for this very important cause here.
