Listen to Those Teens and Help Your Biz

Often times I think people overlook teen trends, thinking they may not apply to their business. For example, trends in communicating, how teens make and keep friends, often hold some of the best ideas for rejuvenating your social media marketing. Check out a recent post on the "5 Teen Social Media Trends that Can Be Applied to Small Business" via Mashable:

  1. Listen to Gossip
  2. Share Content
  3. Have an Attitude
  4. Hang Out
  5. Play Nice with Others
  6. Don’t Stress

Social Shoppers

Does social media use lead to online shopping? A recent survey seems to suggest it does:

In the first quarter of 2010, internet users spent, on average, $50 shopping online, relays eMarketer. According to the survey, Facebook members that use the site heavily spent an average of $67 on online merchandise. More casual Facebook users either exceeded or met the online average as well. Non-visitors spend an average of only $27.

I'd argue it's hard to prove any causal relationship in situations like these. For one thing, social media users tend to be younger — and younger people tend to be more comfortable with online shopping in general.

Causal relationship or not, it's pretty clear that you should be advertising on social networks to capture online shoppers.

Thank You, Mother Monster

If you're the creative director of Polaroid and a pop star that's succeeding at building a base of youthful, devoted fans, then why not get some user-generated proof for your pudding?

Project Gaga 2010 was a user-generated call to arms for Lady Gaga's fanbase (a.k.a. Little Monsters) to send pictures that include the text: "Thank you, mother monster, for giving us all a voice." So far 268 photos have been submitted. Here's an interesting quote from Barking Robot's article:

Today's teens, unlike previous generations, have many more digital tools that allow them to self-organize via social networking sites, coordinate the collection of this photos from around the world, use free web-based tools to produce a video and free distribution on YouTube.

European Teens and Media Consumption

If you're going global, here's a helpful graph via the Forrester Consumer Market Research Blog. It appears that teens habitually engage in media consumption at the same times each day. Results vary per country, but it's a helpful graph for those looking to know when to launch content that engages younger audiences.

Generation Next

The ever-elusive Millennial — hard to pin down, hard to sell to. But a new report by the Pew Research Center — Millennials: Confident. Connected. Open to Change. — might help you do just that. At 149 pages, it's a big read, but Netdiver has some high-level bullet points:

  • They embrace multiple modes of self-expression
  • They are more ethnically and racially diverse than older adults
  • They are more upbeat than their elders about their own economic futures
  • They have placed privacy boundaries on their social media profiles
  • They'll become the most educated generation
  • They sleep with their mobile phone
  • They love tattoos and body piercing

Chapter 4, Technology and Social Media, was very interesting. Of Millennials:

  • 75% have created a social networking profile
  • 29% check social networking sites several times a day
  • 26% check social networking sites once a day
  • Women are more likely to have a profile and use it more frequently
  • 32% have posted a message to an online profile in the last 24 hours
