Sat Sri Akal Facebook!

Or "Hello, Facebook!" for those not familiar with Punjabi. It's easy to stay tucked inside your social bubble, but there is a big world out there and guess what? Facebook lives there, too.

Over the next few weeks I'll be taking a closer look at social media's influence across the globe. Let me start by sharing a few impressive facts:

  • With an astounding 600 million mobile phone users predicted by 2011 and Facebook now available in the languages of over 1 billion people, Facebook has tripled their users year over year in India.
  • The Daily Beast's Tunku Varadarajan wrote a great piece covering the opening of Facebook's offices in Hyderabad a few months ago and the social and cultural influences that have made Facebook a winner in India.
  • While Orkut is gaining some traction, Facebook looks to remain on the upward track in the massive Indian market.
