Apple to Launch Social Network With iTunes 10

In what may turn out to be a very smart move for Apple, they are launching a social network called Ping. Ping is part of the latest iTunes, iTunes 10, and leverages their existing user base. Its members can discover music socially, follow others, be followed and — much like Twitter and Tumblr — post their thoughts and opinions.

Just a few years ago (August 9, 2006, to be exact), MySpace annonced that its 100 millionth account was created. A few years later, in December of 2008, Facebook boasted over 125 million users. With over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, Apple's foray into social networking could become a great way for Apple to leverage its incredibly loyal iTunes user base.

Music has always been a great subject of discussion and opionion, so it makes sense that users would appreciate this kind of social ability. In hindsight, if Apple had rolled Ping out sooner, it could have grown user interaction with iTunes much more quickly — and substantially.

Playlistify Turns Your Playlists into Twitter Lists

Playlistify allows you to "bake" playlists from platforms like iTunes, Spotify, Last.fm, YouTube and even text on the web. Each playlist can be shared on an embeddable interactive gadget or through a http://pli.st short url on your social network.

The newest feature on Playlistify is the ability to import your playlist and turn them into Twitter lists that show the latest tweets from each artist.

Spotify + Tunecore = Music Distribution for the Little Guy

Spotify is a digital music service that gives users access to millions of songs anywhere by allowing them to stream music from Spotify's catalog. On the other hand, Tunecore is a digital music distribution service that allows a band to sell their music online with a few simple steps.

Before Spotify and Tunecore got together you had to be on a big label, or part of a large aggregator, to be part of Spotify’s catalog. Now anyone can upload their music to Tunecore and be listed on Spotify. It offers a unique opportunity for small-time musicians to get their music heard while just being a click away from a download. For now this feature is just available to UK users but U.S. users could be included soon.
